Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of computer equipment is needed for online lessons?
A tablet, laptop, or iPad and good internet speed will be necessary for the best online experience. The video conferencing software works across multiple platforms (Apple, PC).
Is the set-up for remote lessons difficult?
Most students find the set-up to be quick and easy. Keynote Instruction has been using Zoom since 2017, and has found it to be user-friendly and an excellent platform for collaborative learning and music making.
How long is each lesson? How often are lessons held?
Lessons can be 30, 45, or 60 minutes in length. Longer lessons may be recommended as students become more advanced, or to meet specific goals. Two shorter mini-lessons are recommended for very young students, or for students who may benefit from practice support between lessons.
Can I attend lessons with my child?
Yes, you may observe lessons for as long as you would like. However, for younger students, having a parent attend and assist during part or all of the online lessons may be necessary until students are able to work independently with the instructor.
How much practice is recommended?
Practice requirements vary depending on age, goals, and level of material. Your instructor can assist you with a practice schedule that will optimize progress and create a cycle of progress and accomplishment.
What makes Keynote Instruction unique?
Keynote Instruction offers piano lessons from the very young student through the adult learner. Students have the option of traditional classical piano lessons, jazz piano and arranging, or both. Keynote Instruction added online and hybrid piano more than 7 years ago due to student and parent requests. We are experienced in using remote teaching technology so students can focus on learning to play the piano.
What ages do you teach?
Students can begin as early as age 4, depending on the readiness of the child. Lessons are also available for adults - take lessons along with your child!
Do I need an instrument?
Yes, an instrument for practice is crucial for progress and enjoyment of learning to play.
What kind of instruments are recommended? Do I have to have an acoustic piano?
Every family has different space, mobility, and budget requirements. An acoustic or digital piano is recommended, but students can also begin learning with a small keyboard.
What styles of music do you teach?
Students choose traditional lessons that have classical music as a foundation; or learn to play from lead sheets and create their own arrangements of pop, rock, jazz, broadway/show tunes. Each student has their own taste in music, and every effort is made to include these preferences from the very first lesson.
